Job creation and poverty alleviation are key national priorities. If the economy is to succeed, it is imperative that suppliers are empowered to provide goods, works and services that are generated or produced in South Africa. To this end, government has stipulated minimum levels for local content procurement in certain sectors, entrenched in the amended regulations to the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA) in 2011.

The Local Content Award acknowledges a government department or State Owned Entity (SOE) which contributes to industrial development by actively advancing local content procurement.

A second award, honouring a private company which proactively supports the local content programme, will be added as the local content drive gathers momentum and extends into the private sector.
